Cinematographer · Director · Producer
There is a particular kind of filmmaker who understands that every brief is a test of discipline. The commercial that has to sell in thirty seconds. The documentary that has to hold a donor's attention for forty minutes. The PSA that has to reach a population that has stopped listening to warnings.
Kharl Ed Olega has spent twenty-plus years passing those tests — quietly, consistently, and at scale.
He started as a grip at Paparazzi Ltd, then Uganda's most technically rigorous production company. He did not skip steps. He worked his way through production assistant, production manager, and then, in the natural course of things, director and cinematographer. That foundation — knowing the weight of the equipment before picking up the camera — has informed everything since.
He founded SkyRock Production to build a practice with genuine institutional reach. Under that brand, he has produced television commercials for Uganda's biggest consumer brands, documented leadership and development work for BRAC across multiple multi-year projects, and delivered census communication campaigns for the Uganda Bureau of Statistics that reached the entire country.
For UNICEF New York, he produced the B-Roll content for the End Violence Against Children campaign, filmed across three Ugandan districts. For the United States Embassy, he filmed the Young African Leaders Initiative — capturing the next generation of East African decision-makers on camera.
In music, his lens defined the visual identity of artists who are now the pillars of East African music: Maurice Kirya, Rema Namakula, Grace Nakimera, Navio, Angella Katatumba. His reach extended across borders — CMB Prezzo in Kenya, Jean Paul Samputu in Rwanda, AY in Tanzania.
In 2019, he completed his formal education at the University of Southern California, graduating from the School of Cinematic Arts. In 2023, he was among an elite group of international cinematographers invited to conduct camera tests at the American Society of Cinematographers clubhouse in Hollywood — an institution that has shaped the visual language of cinema for over a century.
He returned from each of these experiences to build: Film256, Uganda's national association of film practitioners, which he co-founded and where he serves on the board of trustees. And the classroom at Makerere University, where he teaches film to the next generation.
Kharl Ed Olega works in Uganda. His work travels further.
